Matured in sherry casks works wonders
I requested a bottle of Tomatin for my wife and this is her review:When you first take a sniff of this delicious Tomatin you are aware of a slightly smoky nose but then when you take your first taste it hits you with the familiar tingle on the tongue but without the harsh roughness of many single malts and there is a smooth caramelly depth you don't normally get with standard Scotch whiskies. There is a hint of spiced dried fruit and a slight sweetness which means it can be enjoyed straight or with a splash of soda or water. I can honestly say it is delicious, probably because it is aged in sherry casks. True whisky connoisseurs will love it and the lovely bottle and presentation box make it an ideal gift for them. We recently had some friends visit and they really enjoyed it, normally we have a small glass of liqueur in the evening when they visit but they all agreed that this was just as good!

Beautifully smooth tasting
I read the tasting notes before I tried Tomatin 12 year old sherry cask. I had a glass straight and then one with a drop of water to see the difference. I could swear that I did taste a caramel sweetness but how much of that was the power of suggestion I don't know.I did find it to be a beautiful tasting whisky, sweeter and more caramel-like than most and without the burn of a really strong single malt.It has a rare smoothness and is something I'll definitely consider as a special gift (perhaps even to myself).

Good quality single malt
My Dad tried this whiskey as he is more of a whiskey drinker than me, and though he did enjoy it, he did say he wouldn't buy it for himself. He preferred it with a splash of water. He agreed that it's definitely a good quality single malt, it just wasn't for him entirely.

rich and complex flavour
I gave this whisky as a gift for my husband, and he is absolutely delighted with it. The whisky comes in a beautiful 70cl glass bottle, packaged in a stylish gift box, making it perfect for special occasions. My husband loves the rich and smooth taste, which is ideally balanced with a hint of sweetness from being matured in sherry casks. The 40% alcohol content gives it a nice, warm finish without being too harsh. He especially appreciates the deep, complex flavours that have developed over the 12 years of ageing. It's become his go-to drink for relaxing evenings and special celebrations.

A great gift for whisky drinkers - or for yourself!
This is a splendid whisky that has some mellow flavours and a lovely taste. I have been drinking this with a large chunk of ice in a glass and nothing else, and I think this really allows the flavours to shine. There are hints of vanilla and cinnamon for me, but these are probably more prominant as I am predominantly a rum drinker so my tastes are attuned to these flavours, however I also got a hint of sherry, which is as to be expected. I think that other people might discover different flavours for themselves, and they would enjoy the journey in doing so! This whisky goes down well and it's always a pleasure drinking it.I think this whisky would make a great gift too. The bottle and box are very 'giftable', and let's face it, a twelve year old single malt is a dream gift for any discerning whisky drinker! Highly recommended.

Very smooth for Scottish whisky
Scottish whisky (note the absence of the e) like this typically has a heavier taste than Irish-style whiskey, which is typically smoother.I'm not a massive drinker of either but I found this had less 'bite' than Scottish whisky usually has. I guess that explains the 'softer side' labelling. The aftertaste is nice if a bit woody, though the initial smell is a little odd. I can't really give much in the way of tasting notes as I'm no connoisseur but this is much nicer than any mass-produced stuff you're likely to find in your local pub. This Tomatin comes in a presentation box if you're giving as a gift, though 700ml is going to last me a very long time!

Approachable and traditional. Hidden depths, yet easy to drink.
This is my first encounter with Tomatin, I found it pleasant and approachable. For those who may be new to single malts, especially those held in sherry casks, I found this example to be fairly traditional and fairly mellow. Delicious though! For a sherry cask aged 12yr old whisky, you don't initially get much sherry at all, it comes through in the aftertaste a few mouthfuls in.Flavour-wise, Caramel, Apple, Pear notes are dominant, less dried fruit or Christmas cake than I'd have expected though. It's warming and not harsh as a whole, making it very easy to drink. This can take a little water and benefits from it, but I'd say a splash is all that was needed - don't flood it, or you'll miss out on a lot of the subtle nuances. To me, adding ice closes the aromas down too much for something which is fairly subtle - water works better in my opinion.I'd say that this would make a wonderful gift for someone who's interested in expanding their whisky knowledge, as it really does show a more gentle side to something that can sometimes be harsh and difficult to enjoy.Tomatin have created a very tasty and interesting example of how enjoyable a sherry-casked whisky can be, yet also managed to keep it accessible. I loved the way that on first taste you're impressed by the smooth whisky notes, yet after a few sips, it tasted like you'd been drinking sherry previously.Lots of fun.
