Q: Is it just the dog door, or is it the surroundingg screen you are ordering as well? We have french doors.

It is just the dog door assembly. You put it on your existing screen and then cut the screen to allow the door to swing open and close. Installation is quite simple.

Q: What's the purpose of the zip ties? Step 4 says thread the needle through the net, what does that mean? Instructions are vague and confusing.

I didn't have any zip ties with mine. I did remove the screen door off of the runners and worked on it on the living room floor. I watched a you tube instructional video on how to remove the door. Once on the floor I pressed one side of the door to the other underneath the screen material. Once the front was secured with the back I took a razor blade and cut around the swinging door and the installqtion was complete. Your dog (or cat) door will look exactly like the one in the picture once installed. All this to say if your door is like mine you don't need the zip ties for this installation.

Q: Does it swing both ways and fors it have a magnetic to help keep it closes?

Yes, it does. Our dogs go out both ways and the magnet helps to slow it down then after the magnet will hold it closed.

Q: Does the screen door itself still slide open and close easily?

Yes, the pet door had no effect on the screen door sliding open
